Half Training: Week 1 of 16 Complete

I have started training for my next half marathon. I chose to use Runner’s World Smart Coach again and cross referenced with McMillian. I figured I would stick with the program that worked for me last half marathon. Especially since I have recovered from some injuries this fall and need to build my mileage up again.

Week one looked like this:
M: Rest (Rob was sick)
T: Rest (Rob was sick)
W: 5 Miles Tempo Run
R: Rest
F: 6 Miles Long Run
Sa: Bike 30 mins, abs and pushups
Su: 2 Miles Easy Run, Bowflex Chest

Total Running Miles: 13 Miles

Deer Run – 8K Euro Cross Country – 52:07

This race was a challenge for me because I have a cold and probably shouldn’t have been out running, but missing a chance to race was enough to get me out there. Weather conditions were 33 degrees with 29 mph winds gusting to 35 mph. I had never done this race before and would rank it in my top most challenging so far. Perhaps because I’m not much of a trail runner and also because I’ve never had to manuever up and over barricades (steeple chasers) before. The ground was uneven and muddy, but luckily not icy. I had my secret weapon thanks to this month’s Runner’s World article and my husband. We turned my last pair of running shoes into trail shoes by screwing in cleats (sheet metal screws) into them, very cool! I plan to use these bad boys on the snowy road as I train this winter. I’m so happy to have completed this race injury free and just hope my head cold doesn’t punish me more later.

Jingle Bell – 5K – 27:51

It was 29 degrees with 19 mph winds so with the wind chill it was about 17 degrees. Despite the cold it was a fun time to get out and race. Rob, Drew and Carrie ran. Plus Drew and Carrie’s friends were there too so we had a good group out there. This was Jingle Bell race so it is packed which makes it more challeging to manuever. I had my time as 8 seconds faster, but the chute was backed up. I was 6th in my age group. Had my shoe laces double knotted this time. 🙂
